For some, their careers have changed on them --thanks to corporate mergers, changes in technology, company restructuring, age discrimination, and a thousand other reasons.

After counseling thousands of people in finding new careers and jobs, we have found that there are 5 classic mistakes most career and job changers make:

MISTAKE 1: NO CLEAR GOAL.

Not having a clear goal is like trying to run a race when you do not know where the finish line is. Many career changers have only a partial goal. They KNOW that they want a job with less stress, or more money, or more of a future, or more independence, or more satisfaction. A career goal, however, should be comprehensive, specific, clear, and realistic. It should include not only the practicalities of your situation, but also who you are, the realities of the job market, and the potential pitfalls.

MISTAKE 2: NO CLEAR PICTURE OF YOUR STRENGTHS.

Most career changers (and job seekers) spend more time worrying about their weaknesses than their strengths. Most people don't even know what their strengths are. But it is your strengths--not your weaknesses--that determine your career success. Get a professional assessment. This should also include your personal characteristics, motivation, aptitudes, goals, values, interests, and talents. A career and job decision is too important not to have this picture.

MISTAKE 3: NO CAREFUL PLANNING.

Sure, most people think about it for a long time, but thinking is not the same thing as detailed planning. Most people plan a night out with friends more carefully than they plan their careers. Planning would mean researching the new career, talking to people who are in the new career, getting some hands-on experience, reading (books, trade journals, industry newsletters), developing strategies for any possible negatives or problems, consulting with a mentor, knowing what education or training you would need, and other actions.

MISTAKE 4: NO MOTIVATION.

As a psychologist who has worked with underachievers of all ages, I can tell you that many have good intentions but fail to take action. This is, of course, a normal human trait. There are times when all of us procrastinate, give ourselves excuses, and do not do the things that will lead us to our goals. If you are changing careers, however, you had better be motivated. Only consistent, daily, well-considered action will get you where you want to go.

MISTAKE 5: NO INDIVIDUALIZED JOB SEARCH STRATEGY.

If you are changing careers, you need something more than the usual job search tactics. You need a strategy that fits who you are as a unique individual and the fact that you are changing careers. For example, if you tell a job interviewer (or anyone else) that you are "changing careers," it is the kiss of death. You see, if you are changing careers, then you are starting over--from square one--and are competing with kids just out of school. Instead, you should say, "I am taking the next step in my career" (which, actually, is closer to the truth for most career changers). Another example: Make sure your résumé is rewritten so that it doesn't "lock you in" to the old career. Go light on the jargon. Emphasize skills in the old career that would be a real advantage (not just "transferable skills") in the new career.

If you avoid these classic mistakes, you are well on your way to making a successful job and career change.

The best agents are always getting real estate leads.

I was talking with my sales floor the other day and I was reminded of what my GetMyHomesValue.com partners Steve Young, Dave Conklin and myself always say and preach: agents need to understand they're starting their own business. When you get your license, you have to take it from the standpoint of you're starting your own business.

If by your efforts you can make more money, then you must treat what you do as your own business. Especially in real estate....when you get your license, your income is exponential. I know agents who haven't had a settlement in months. I know others who make over a million dollars a year. Do they work 30 hours a week? No. But the one who hasn't had a settlement in 6 to 8 months and hasn't gotten paid is probably working less than 30 hours a week...or is working lazy, scared and stupid.

I hear agents complaining about the wrong thing. Check your ego at the door and make it happen. Your job is to do nothing but generate real estate leads. Take coaching classes, get me to coach you, whatever you need to do. It's a matter of doing the right things. There are lots of resources, seminars, lots of motivational speakers out there who can teach you what to do...you just have to DO it! You have to be willing to follow through to fruition the things you learn when you drop $1k - $5k on a 2-3 day training seminar on how to be a better salesperson. It's all fine and dandy, but if you don't really USE it, you just wasted $1k - $5k, plain and simple.

In real estate, your only goal is to generate real estate leads...always, constantly, every effort you make is to generate leads. There are people who have been in the business 6 years that get in a rut where they have no listings, no business, no pipeline. It's common sense. No agent should ever scratch their head and wonder why they don't have a commission every single month. If you're constantly generating real estate leads, it'll happen.

Keep in mind that a referral is a lead. It doesn't matter where you get the leads. If someone says "I work strictly off referrals," then they've settled for the income they have and they just don't want any more business. Building on your "Sphere of Influence" is lead generation...you've convinced people somewhere along the way to bring up your name when somebody they know has a real estate need. I did it all the time. I used to get referrals from people I didn't even do real estate for. Everything you do...ads, open houses, yard signs you purchase, business cards, your website, flyers, online lead generation services...all of it is for real estate leads.

The person with the most real estate leads wins, plain and simple...as long as you FOLLOW UP on the leads till they "buy or die." That's the biggest mistake agents make with their real estate leads...giving up after very few attempts or not even bothering to follow up.

We get cancellations every month at GetMyHomesValue.com from agents who have been with the service for a month or less, received a few real estate leads (including verified leads) and STILL cancel because nobody's "panned out" yet. If I was an agent again, I would subscribe to more than one lead generation service and would not expect to see any return for at least 6 months. Period. There are those exceptions, but don't fool yourself into counting on the exceptions.

Understand that you are filling your pipeline with real estate leads to nurture into active customers. Some of them won't do anything with you for 2 or 3 years. Some of those real estate leads will do something in 2 or 3 months. It sounds like a cliche, but it's true...it's a numbers game and a contact sport. I actually had a GetMyHomesValue.com customer tell me that good agents don't knock on doors. She was right...good agents don't knock on doors. Great agents are the ones knocking on doors...and getting commission checks every month. Any consistently successful agent will tell you the same.

Everything is lead generation and the rest is follow up. You have to have a strong follow up plan for your real estate leads. So many agents today aren't putting out the effort. They say, "Aww they must have known that person from Coldwell Banker for years, that's why I didn't get that listing," when the truth is that they only sent them an email, while the person from Coldwell Banker (or wherever) called them, visited them, did a CMA without being asked, sent them a card, made 7 or 8 different contacts before they actually got the appointment...then earned the listing.

So many agents are impatient. They think a lead is supposed to buy or sell NOW! You have to have a follow up plan, because you sometimes get these leads early in the process and you get to make the first impression and set the precedent. You get to be the most unforgettable. And that's the bottom line with following up with real estate leads: don't let them forget you.

Even if they were making $2000/day with Google AdSense, it'd be because they had high- traffic websites with a lot of quality content. I'd know, because in one whole month, I never even made half of what they promised I'd make daily with their programs. Maybe you've already been scammed by one of these fraudsters. Anyway, I finally got sick of what was being offered.
I decided I'd look through the all of the "get rich quick" programs I could find and see if there were any that were actually legitimate. I found that there were owners selling their programs for well over $100, but the information in them could be found almost anywhere online for free. Additionally, they all contained out-of-date information, had no e-mail support, no money back guarantees, and broken links in the downloads section.
In conclusion, almost all of the programs I found were completely useless. The owners knew it, but they couldn't care less about their customers since they didn't offer refund policies! Amazingly, while looking through all of the programs, I actually did find a few legitimate programs. They were run by ordinary people like you and me, and they had found some great methods of making money from their home by doing very little work.
I spent some time working with those programs, and my income is now ten times what it used to be. These programs provided a large amount of great information on how to make extra money on your computer doing very little work. Numerous customers had provided great feedback and reviews for their products. Many of them have started to make money just days after buying!
Their programs have excellent prices, and the authors have a group of paid staff who are dedicating to helping you or providing assistance if you need any. I must say I was amazed! It's a sad state of affairs when your nine to five job isn't always reliable enough for a person and their family to live off of. It's sad when ordinary professions don't bring home the bacon anymore, but having another source of income, a residual source of income that only takes spurts of work to generate revenue, is all too important for your financial security.

There are many ways to create residual income and frankly-not every way is for every body. There are some things that require more work, or a different type of work, than some people are able to do or accustomed to doing. Real estate, for instance-choosing and sometimes having to fix up houses, not to mention keep up the rental properties and go through all of the financial issues that come along with being a landlord.

And then there are other ways of creating residual income like selling the rights to a book or screenplay you wrote or an invention that you have created. Creative ways of building a secondary source of income are, obviously, not for everybody just as purchasing and maintaining rental properties is not for everyone. Unfortunatly or fortunately for osme, creative abilities are not always the strong point-but they are an option for the "softer souls" out there who have been looking for a way to generate extra income in a one-shot type of way. Just find something YOU are good at, and are passionate about, and the rewards will be greater.

All the website owner had to do was create the website, or hire somebody to do it in many cases. Somebody random came across the site and clicked on one of the ads, and they were compensate; these programs are often called PPC or 'pay-per-click programs.'

Similar in tiered structure to 'pay-per-click'programs are affiliate marketing programs, sometimes called MLM or network marketing programs. Affiliate marketing has to do with helping to generate business for businesses on the internet, including but not limited to driving paying members to the site. Why Faith is so Important for Success

We are constantly attracting those thoughts (vibrations) that harmonize with the thoughts that dominate our mind.

I recently purchased the new version of the timeless classic, Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill (1937). Through the years, the original text had been edited to make it more contemporary. But current wisdom says the original message stands the test of time, so the version I read is the original manuscript fully restored, annotated, indexed and revised by Ross Cornwell.

When I first read this book, it profoundly changed my life. That first reading took place more than 20 years ago, and I have reread the book many times since. And through the years, as I study more and more information about success and the power of the mind, I am pleasantly surprised to discover that the principles revealed in Napoleon Hill’s work are present in almost every piece of self-help material I come across.

Every time I read Hill’s book I gain new insights and wisdom that I did not pick up in previous readings. Take, for instance, the chapter on faith. Faith has been a very strong tool responsible for my success, and yet this time around I noticed a passage in Chapter 2 that I had never really paid much attention to.

This particular passage is so powerful that the author asks you to read it not once, not twice, but four times—even reading it aloud until you “hear” it.

FAITH is the ‘eternal elixir” which gives life, power and action to the impulse of thought!

FAITH is the starting point of all accumulation of riches!

FAITH is the basis of all ‘miracles.’

FAITH is the only known antidote for FAILURE.

FAITH is the element; the “chemical” which when mixed with prayer gives one direct communication with infinite intelligence.

FAITH is the element which transforms the ordinary ‘vibration of thought,’ created by the finite human mind, into its spiritual equivalent.

FAITH is the only agency through which the cosmic force of infinite intelligence can be harnessed and used by humanity.”
I don’t know about you, but the ability to harness infinite intelligence sounds like a pretty powerful tool to me.
Another profound quote from the book—a quote that changed my life— says,
“Whatever the mind can conceive and believe, it can achieve.”
I use to conceive all kinds of ideas but had a great deal of difficulty with believing. Consequently, I was not achieving all that I desired. In short, I lacked the faith.

This brings me to the part I never really noticed in chapter 2 about FAITH. Hill explains that, the principle of autosuggestion (self suggestion of thoughts through the conscious mind to influence the subconscious mind):“FAITH is a state of mind, which may be induced or created, by affirmations or repeated instructions to the subconscious mind, through the principle of autosuggestion”. In other words, if you repeat desired ideas or suggestions to yourself, you convince your subconscious mind that you believe it is true.

Because you have faith that it is going to happen those thoughts become things in your experience. The subconscious mind, in which all thought impulses are combined and made ready for translation to physical reality, makes no distinction between negative or positive thoughts. It just delivers (vibrationally) whatever you think about most. So I've learned to use autosuggestion to consciously install thoughts about what I want to attract in my life—including the faith I need to succeed.Our thoughts are vibrations of energy transferred through some mysterious current.

We are constantly attracting those thoughts (vibrations) that harmonize with the thoughts that dominate our mind.

The subconscious, through repetition and emotion, will translate into reality your thoughts driven by fear just as readily as it will translate your thoughts driven by courage. It’s not that if you worry endlessly about losing your job you will necessarily lose your job. But you will manifest an event or circumstance that vibrationally feels the same as if you lost your job.

So, if you are filling your mind with fear, doubt and disbelief, the Law of Autosuggestion will deliver circumstances and events filled with fear, doubt and disbelief to you. If you fill your mind with positive, courageous and expectant thoughts, it will deliver circumstances and events filled with positive, courageous and expectant results.

These days, we hear about Law of Attraction as if it’s a new concept. But there it is, all spelled out in a book written over 75 years ago.

Hill goes on to talk about how Mahatma Gandhi was one of the most powerful examples of faith in action. He inspired two hundred million people to move in unison through the influence of faith. Abraham Lincoln was another.

You must first be able to sell yourself on your own ideas before you can ever sell anyone else on the same ideas. You can learn to strengthen your faith by using autosuggestion to influence your thoughts.

Remember, faith is indispensable for success. Resolve to put out of your mind those negative thoughts that will compromise your faith.

Exercise:
Ask yourself, “Which beliefs do I need to have more faith in before I can reach my goal?”

Once you identify the beliefs write down affirmations you can input into your subconscious to increase your faith.

As every business owner knows, almost every business is born from a passion for “some thing” that we think we can do better on our own. The need for freedom, independence and unlimited earning potential gets the better of us and the next thing you know, you are in business for yourself.

Most of us start our business with a very idealistic vision of what’s possible, pour hundreds of hours with very little financial return for the first few years only to realize we’ve taken a very hard road to success.

Take my client Michele PW for example. She started as a “freelancer.” She would work tirelessly, 10, 12, 14 hours a day, writing copy until she had enough money to pay her bills. Then, exhausted and burned out, she wouldn’t work again until she needed more money. Frustrated that she couldn’t break the $50k mark, she realized one day that her freelancer mindset was getting in the way of creating the level of success she really desired.

It’s at this point in the game that an opportunity surfaces. The entrepreneur must make a decision. Most of us up to this point have been playing with a hobby, thinking more like a free-lancer than someone who expects to be quite successful in business. The excitement of our craft is more interesting than all that stuff that it takes to run a business (like bookkeeping, marketing, sales, etc.) The future is unknown so we just focus on today. Profit is a mystery…so we don’t really even look at planning and revenue.

But the problem is there are certain things you MUST DO to truly create a business. The IRS considers you a hobby, and taxes you appropriately, if certain success indicators are not in place. If you don’t have these indicators in place in YOUR BUSINESS, you really don’t have a business at all…you just have a hobby.

Now it’s OK to have a hobby that you love. But if you have a hobby you must be realistic about your income potential and goals. If you have a hobby, you just won’t have the time, resources or financial capital to get past a certain point of success.

Here are a Six Successful Business Owner Indicators:

1. You operate in a business-like manner. You have an LLC or Corporation status, not a self-employed status with your bank accounts intermingled. You also have a business identify with a recognizable brand, marketing collateral and a presence in your industry.

2. Cocktail napkin drawings and random post-it notes don’t count. You take the time to create and follow a written business plan.

3. You are making a profit (or are working towards it.) This is crucial. Viability is a major distinction between a hobby and a business. Hobbies don’t have to make money. Businesses do.

4. You continue to focus on improving your business operations. A hobby is there for the sheer passion factor. A business requires you to continually assess what’s working and what’s not – and fix it.

5. You have a team. You can’t have a successful business without help. It’s impossible. If you are doing it alone, you are missing a key ingredient for profitability and long-term success.

6. You and your team continue to educate yourself on how to run a successful business. Do you have a budget set aside for education and training? Do you consciously plan not just for marketing training but real for leadership, management and fundamental business mentoring?

These are just a few of the indicators to consider if you desire a business that is positioned for consistent six and seven figure revenue. If you are someone who wants to have meaning in your life, make a difference in your community and have passion for your work, creating a business with the proper systems and infrastructure is an important investment.

We all need some confidence building from time to time. Part of feeling confident has a lot to do with how we feel about ourselves. Feeling like we can accomplish things we set out to do is important to feeling confident.

Remember that we all have talents and gifts. Whether we feel confident in these skills is very much part of thinking like a winner. Here is an easy way you can train yourself to think like a winner.

Make yourself a ‘to do' list. Before you start complaining that you've tried that already in the past and it didn't work, let's go over the rules for this list. This is a list to make you feel like a winner.

It is your job to help yourself to feel as much like a winner as possible by making a list that is fun and easy to get done. I mean super easy. Ridiculously easy, even.

Here's a sample list:

1. Get out of bed. 2. Brush my teeth and comb my hair. 3. Get dressed. 4. Eat something. 5. Eat something else. 6. Walk to a car, bus or another room. 7. Smile. 8. Answer the phone. But only if it rings. 9. Put socks on...

Are you getting the idea? This isn't your average ‘to do' list. This is a sort of self-conditioning list. Seeing all those check marks or seeing everything crossed off your list will make you feel like you've had a productive day. You'll gain confidence in your abilities to get things done.

If you practice this fun list making, you'll come to think of yourself as a winner. If you forget to write the list one morning, write a ‘done' list at the end of the day. Just list ‘got out of bed', etc. and mark them off.

As silly as this confidence building list making may seem, bear in mind that the subconscious doesn't care about what is real or imagined. All it will see is a list that has been checked off every day. Eventually, you'll notice yourself feeling more confident. You can then start adding real tasks to your list and doing them with the same ‘feel good' attitude you had when you made your practice lists.

Don't add too many, to start. Camouflage the real items you want to accomplish with your stand-by easy ones. The reason you don't want to do a complete shift in list writing is that feeling good is an important element of confidence building.

Just look at someone you know to be confident. Are they down in the mouth or smiling? Allow yourself the joy of having fun with life. You'll feel like a winner!
