We all know people who can keep their cool. Levelheaded people are exceptional. They stand out because they don't show anxiety. But butterflies are a natural part of life. Maybe showing your feelings isn't always appropriate or to your benefit, but feeling your feelings is always important. And, making friends with your anxiety is a key to good decision-making.

So what's the difference between a cool-headed person and a person who can make good decisions under pressure? Well sometimes they're the same person, but when they're not, the difference is how each uses emotional energy while making decisions. The decision-maker works with his or her feelings to use them as part of the decision-making process, while the cool customer expends energy suppressing his or her feelings. It's a subtle difference, but it's real.

When I talk to job candidates before their interviews, I always discuss butterflies. I hope the candidate has uncomfortable feelings. She should feel slightly nervous. As a job candidate, she's going to be judged. Since she is pursuing something valuable her body should register anxiety...hopefully not too much. The secret to being emotionally available for the interview is not to let those nervous feelings get in the way. Make friends with your butterflies. Use the butterflies to remind you of something important for the interview.

Anxiety is important for more than just interviews. Learning to bring feelings into all your business interactions will help every decision you make, including career development decisions.

If you're interested in a radiology job, chances are good you may be asked to travel. Many radiologists love the idea of going where they are most needed, and the chance to see the country while performing their jobs is a great benefit.

While the idea of radiology jobs based on travel certainly isn't an ideal solution, it is a quick and efficient way to make sure everyone gets the care they need regardless of where they're located.

So how does it work? Typically, a technologist who is willing to travel will be employed by an agency. The agency will put the tech in contact with various facilities, and the tech will sign a temporary contract with a hospital or clinic. It has always been clear that a college graduate could make more money than a high school graduate but new research is showing that college degree holders and their families are generally more happy and healthy than those with just a high school diploma.

The money equation has never been simpler math. A college graduate will make on average twice as much per year than a high school graduate. Over an average working lifetime that will add up to a million dollar gap in earning power. A person with a masters degree can make triple the money and a doctorate will bring in as much as four times the income as a high school diploma.

But the intangible value of a college education have long been in doubt and debated widely. Now studies are showing a remarkable list of quality of life benefits that accrue to college graduates versus their high school only counterparts.

That list includes longer life spans, better access to health care, and better dietary and health practices. In other words, better overall health. But the list also includes things that make people happier. Things like greater Internet access, greater attendance at live performances, greater participation in leisure and artistic activities and more book purchases.

A college education makes better citizens as well. College graduates have less dependency on government assistance, lower levels of criminal activity and incarceration, greater community service and leadership, and more volunteer work. Who would you rather have living next to you, a high school graduate or someone with a university degree?

Knowledge is indeed power and not every college graduate is a saint and not every person with only a high school education is a sinner. But it appears that those who have more knowledge do less damage to their society on average and contribute a great deal more. One only need look at societies where education was banned to see the result.

The other intangible but real impact of a college education is on the children of those who complete a college degree program. Once the door has been opened they gladly follow through. They end up improving their own lives and their children's lives as well. Just as welfare pulls children under, education lifts them higher.

Not everyone can attend university or college for a wide range or reasons that are almost all related to finances. But every year more of those barriers get knocked down and more and more students walk through. Knowing what we know now, wouldn't this be an even greater country if everybody who wanted to could have a college education

How Pickled Veggie Saved This Family

When crises happen, you basically have two choices - give up and accept defeat or rise to the challenge. This is a story of one woman who stared back at the crisis she was facing, and triumphed. In the process, she became a home based business owner and saved her family.

Lakshmi was a simple, unassuming Indian woman. She was a stay-at-home mother with four small children. While her husband worked as a construction supervisor, she would take care of the home and her four children. Her life was routinely ordinary and she had simple dreams for her children - to make sure her children were educated and got good jobs. Life though had other plans for Lakshmi and her children.

Tragedy struck one day when Lakshmi's husband was hit by a lorry on a busy street and died instantly. Lakshmi was in a state of shock even as she took care of the funeral arrangements. The day after her husband was cremated, she sat her children down and told them, "Papa is gone, but I am here. Things will be difficult for a while, but Mama will take care of everything, I will always be here for you". She said those words to comfort her children, but in her heart, Lakshmi was in a state of panic. The money her husband left her would only last a few months. She had to find a source of income soon.

A relative suggested that while she looked for some sort of work, Lakshmi could try and sell her pickled vegetables to earn some extra money. Lakshmi's delicious pickled veggie was as popular with her friends and neighbours as it was with her family. Lakshmi was doubtful, but with little choice left, she agreed. She asked her neighbours if they would be interested in buying some of her pickled veggie. They readily agreed, so the next day, Lakshmi cooked up a batch of her pickled veggie and sold it to four families. Two of the families asked if she would cook a batch of pickled veggie for them every week. Lakshmi agreed even though she wondered if they were doing it out of pity for her.

As Lakshmi looked for full-time work, she continued to supply families with her pickled veggie. Word of her delicious pickled veggie reached the local grocery store and they called her to ask if she would consider supplying them with her pickled veggie. This was more than Lakshmi had hoped for. More and more shops began asking her to supply them with her pickled veggie and soon, finding a job was no longer on Lakshmi's list of priorities. She had other problems to deal with - how to increase production of her now famous pickled veggie and how to meet supply deadlines!

Five years after Lakshmi was thrown into the sea of crisis, she had triumphed over adversity and was a genuine successful home-based business owner. When asked why she chose to remain home-based and not to expand her business, she answered simply, "I made a promise to my children that I would always be there for them". Her home-based business enabled her to fund her children's university education and to provide them with a comfortable living.

Like Lakshmi, many people are "accidental" home-based business owners. When crisis rears it's ugly and frightful head, they are forced to rely on the one thing that they are naturally good at. For Lakshmi, it was her pickled veggie, for you it may be something equally simple and seemingly insignificant. For the rest of us, there is a lesson to be learnt from Lakshmi - that success doesn't have to depend on being highly qualified and skilled.
