Whether it is job satisfaction, career development or job search success, things may not be going your way. When this happens, there is a natural tendency to disengage, to unplug. You go through the motions, but part of your mind is elsewhere, unfocussed.

You can instantly recognize people who are fully engaged. They are focused, working on what is most important at that time, and committed. And you can recognize those who are not. Which are you?

You need to be aware of a significant career management danger. In this tough economy and job market, your professional expectations may be unmet. Whether it is job satisfaction, career development or job search success, things may not be going your way. When this happens, there is a natural tendency to disengage, to unplug. You go through the motions, but part of your mind is elsewhere, unfocussed.

You can instantly recognize people who are fully engaged. They are focused, working on what is most important at that time, and committed. And you can recognize those who are not. Which are you?

Why your head should be in the game Here is what happens when you aren't fully engaged. Your efforts are scattered. You don't do your best, which hurts you and hurts your employer, colleagues and clients. With one foot out the door and one in, you are dissatisfied which often negatively impacts your personal life. You are certainly not using your talents to their fullest. You are wasting your precious time and may be a productivity risk to your employer. You aren't making a difference. In short, you are sabotaging your career.

Certainly, we all have days when our motors just aren't running at full speed. That's fine. What you should be concerned with, however, is identifying if you are habitually disengaged, and if so, resolve to snap out of it.

What can you do about it?

1.Diagnose yourself Take a page from Dr. Phil and accept reality. Is your head really in the game or not? Here are some statements to test yourself:

* I am frequently or always dissatisfied with my work situation and I haven't done anything concrete to resolve it

* I tend to complain, put the blame on others, or I have developed a cynical attitude

* I always have one foot out the door, keeping my options open, but never acting on them

* I jump from job to job, assignment to assignment without really settling, or making a difference

* I haven't made a noticeable difference where I work or the projects I work on

* My performance barely meets expectations, or worse

* My mind wanders during my work day and I have trouble focusing and delivering on projects and responsibilities

* I feel bested or outclassed by colleagues or customers when I am discussing work-related things. I don't have a lot to say.

* My presentation is weak, sloppy or lacking direction

* I don't have a plan as to what my next steps are from now, going forward

If you answered yes to 1 or more of the above, then follow the remaining steps.

2.Try and figure out why One way to do that is to review your history. Is this the first time you have been in this situation or is it a recurring pattern? If the later, then the chances are that it is you rather than your environment. If the former, what is it about your current situation and environment that is causing it?

3. What choice can you make right now that will make a difference? A common reaction is to identify some large change and focus on that as the answer to our lack of engagement. "If I only had this job, or worked for this company, then I would give 110%." Maybe. But what about today?

We choose how we react to our environment. What can you do today? Here are some things you can do:

Change your attitude. A reality-check can do wonders in changing behavior. Refocus.

Go deep. Overreact. Throw yourself into your work or job search. Do your best. Immerse yourself and see what happens.

Identify what motivates you and focus on building that. See if you can inject more of those motivations into what you do. In particular, those things which align with the priorities of your employer, or your own business.

Find the good in your situation. What can you identify about your job or situation that is positive? Be thankful for what you have.

Identify what the key success criteria are for you, for your employer, colleagues and customers. Determine how you can be successful in the current environment and focus on that.

4.Medium-term strategies:

Go internal. Build on what you have started in the short-term. How can you turn this situation around and be a rousing success story?

Adjust your expectations. Goals can be energizing if we actively pursue them, or a real drag on our energy when we keep them alive without making progress towards their fulfillment. Resolve to pursue those goals that mean something to you and dump the rest.

Make a change. If you need to make a change, do it. But, do it with determination, passion, and focus.

Get help. If you recognize a long-standing pattern of behavior and believe that its roots run deeper than career management issues, then seek qualified, professional help.

Special Advice for Job Seekers As a job seeker in a tough market, you need to be engaged on at least two levels. Obviously, the first level is applying yourself with focused determination to the process of the job search itself.

The second level is less obvious. You must demonstrate that you are fully engaged in your industry, profession, or particular specialty. Believe me, you will stand out more if you ooze commitment to your profession. See Creating your own Opportunities for some ideas.

If you want to create a profitable work at home business, this isn't going to work. You need to complete an honest inventory of what skills you have.

When you decide it's time to start seriously considering your dream of owning a work at home business, set aside a couple of hours when you won't be disturbed, and sit down with a pen and piece of paper. Draw a line down the center of the paper creating two columns. At the top of one column make a heading of "Skills" and at the top of the second column a heading of "Challenges". Now comes the tricky bit. Seriously think about your natural abilities/skills and education and make a note of every positive attribute you possess in the "Skills" column. Make sure you include things such as an ability to write, garden, make puppets, find bargains etc. Once this list is complete, turn your attention to the things that you aren't so good at and make another list identifying these points. If you have a friend or family member you trust and who knows you well, ask them to take a look at the list and tell you if they agree with it, and if they can think of anything you have missed off. Often it's the people closest to us who are able to identify our strengths and weaknesses easier than we can ourselves!

When both lists are complete, it's time to assess what kind of work at home business would be most appropriate for you, and which ones to avoid. For example, you may have a degree in garden design and love plants - but if you hate being outdoors then gardening is not a good business idea, or if you hate working on your own then working out with other people perhaps in a sales or consulting capacity will be better ideas than working as a web designer where you have little contact with anyone else.

It's human nature to spend more energy on the things that really interest us and that we feel we are good at. As a medical transcriptionist, I do get asked several times a month, how I got started in this business. So many people nowadays want to work from home, especially mothers with young children. That's the primary reason I started my home business ten years ago, so I could be there for my daughter. I didn't want someone else taking care of her after school instead of me.

It's really not hard to start a medical transcription business. The start-up costs are low compared to many other home-based businesses.

You need a form of education, via home study courses or by attending your local community college. You do NOT need a degree in medical transcription to start a business either.

In a short amount of time, usually nine months or less, you can be working from the comfort of your own home, just like me.

You will need some equipment, such as a computer, a printer, a transcriber, and some reference books. All of which can be purchased second hand if need be. The latest and greatest equipment is not necessary to get started.

Now, there are some special skills you will need, outside of the education, which include:

* Excellent grammar skills

* Good Listening Skills,

* Basic computer skills with a word processing program

* Research Skills

* Ability to type - your speed will increase with experience

* Must be detail oriented

* Ability to work on your own

* Ability to maintain work deadlines and be a self-motivator

You will also need some computer programs such as a medical spellchecker and a word expander utility to cut down on the amount of actual typing you do. Some programs, such as Microsoft Word® include this type of utility. It is the best invention by far, in my opinion.

Basic bookkeeping is necessary, but not difficult. A good bookkeeper is great to have when it comes to taxes and advising you about saving money with tax deductions for your business.

Medical transcription is usually paid by the amount of work transcribed. Therefore, it is quite normal to charge your clients by the line. If you charge 13 cents per line and type 200 lines per hour, (this is a very comfortable speed to type) your hourly rate would end up being about $26.00.

Being self-employed does have some pitfalls. One must consider, as with any home based business, that once you become self-employed you are responsible for securing your own health insurance, and putting away money for retirement.

However, there are many positive things about being self-employed, as I'm sure you can imagine. For me, what I love the most, is the flexibility I have with my time.

If I want to work late in the day I can, and if I want to work early in the morning, that's up to me. Running a home-based medical transcription business is a lot of fun.

Medical transcription is not for everyone, and it is important before venturing in to any business that you weigh up the pros and cons of it all and do what is best for your situation.

The increases have been seen in public universities and associate level colleges rather than at historically African American colleges, for which enrollment has declined over the last decade. This offers an indicator of the mainstreaming of attitudes across minorities toward the educational system as a whole.

The board notes that there are still many hurdles to overcome and problems on the horizon both nationally and in the South. Graduation rates for African Americans are still lower than the national average. The study did not calculate graduation rates for the Southern states region, but an analysis commissioned by The Associated Press calculated the graduation rates for the 16 states in the board's report.

While progress is being made in terms of overall enrollment, more initiatives are needed at the elementary and high school levels to ensure that minority students have the educational foundation necessary to succeed at the collegiate level. Active enrollment is a positive step but until graduation rates are on par with non-minority students, the post college playing field is unequal.

Within the minority groups represented in the study, graduation rates from the Associated Press data vary substantially. Hispanics are now the most underrepresented group in colleges and universities across the South, yet have higher graduation rates than African American students. Six-year graduation rates were 40 percent for African Americans, 46 percent for Hispanics, and 56 percent for whites compared to 41 percent, 44 percent and 60 percent respectively nationwide.

As a matter of fact, there's a good chance you've even cut your caloric intake, but still the weight remains. Could this weight gain be associated with menopause? If you're a woman in your thirties of forties, the answer is "yes - most definitely." Weight gain, as you approach menopause, is quite common and often one of the first symptoms of menopause that women notice. This is true even if you're still experiencing regular periods.

You see, as you approach menopause your body's hormone levels are declining, thus causing many changes to occur. As your estrogen levels decline, your body will naturally look for other places from where to get the needed estrogen. Unfortunately, fat cells are capable of producing estrogen, which results in your body working harder to convert calories to fat.

In addition to the declining levels of estrogen, your body's testosterone levels are also declining. As you may know, testosterone is the hormone that converts your calories to lean muscle mass. Obviously, with lower testosterone levels you're now losing muscle mass. Since muscle burns far more calories than does fat, your body is no longer capable of burning calories the way it used to.

As you can see, your declining hormone levels are the main culprit behind all of the weight gain you're now noticing. Don't think for one minute that you need to accept or welcome this unwanted enemy because you can easily lose this menopausal weight gain. You must build muscle to turn your body into a calorie-burning machine. Employee turnover is unavoidable. It is a fact of business life as are its associated costs. Or are they? The costs of employee turnover can be staggering, ranging anywhere from 1/2 to 5 times an employee's annual wages dependant upon his or her position. It is neither possible, nor desirable to completely eliminate turnover from your organization. Some of the costs associated with employee turnover are unavoidable and must be expected to occur in the normal course of business. BUT NOT ALL THE COSTS!!! You can do something about these turnover costs…

Before you can start to combat the costs of employee turnover, you must be aware of what these cost are and what they entail. There of course are some obvious costs that come quickly to mind, but there are also numerous other costs that you may have never considered that can have a serious impact on your bottom line.

The Hard Costs:

Turning over one employee can cost around ½ of a low skilled hourly worker's annual wages plus benefits, while losing a member of C-Level upper management can cost 3 to 5 times his or her annual wages and benefits.

Consider this: if your firm has a turnover rate of 25% (about the national average) and employs 40 employees each earning $25,000 annually, your costs of turning over 10 of these employees over the course of a year will be at least $125,000! What could you do with an additional $100,000+ in resources?

Severance pay can also be a huge part of employee turnover costs. This is especially true with highly skilled employees and high-level management. These are wages on which you will never see any return on you investment!

The costs of recruitment: Each time an employee is lost the hiring and selection cycle must start again. These costs can be significant: advertising costs to announce your job opening to the masses, cost of recruitment agencies, background checks, reference checks, drug testing, cost of overtime pay, temporary help and much more.

Hiring costs: Once you’ve made a hiring decision, the costs of turnover don’t stop, but rather continue. Sign on bonuses, relocation costs, and any increases in salary level necessary to attract new talent all add up quickly. The time spent by HR managers to orientate and train the new employee can also be costly and unnecessary. These are all tangible costs that could be avoided with a better employee retention.

Other Costs: Some Food for Thought

There are clearly a number of turnover costs that can be easily quantifiable, but these costs often times are just the tip of the iceberg. There are numerous turnover costs that will never appear on any balance sheet or income statement that can have a serious impact on your firm’s bottom line.

First of all consider the affects on productivity that are caused by turnover. It takes on average 8 weeks to recruit and hire a new employee. During this time production can seriously falter. Other employees have to pick up the slack in production, often taking on tasks and responsibilities they are unfamiliar with or untrained in. This can drain team morale and further hurt production. The negative affect on production caused by turnover doesn’t stop when a new employee is hired. There is always a learning curve associated with any job; for some it can be short and insignificant, while for many others it can be a considerable period of time. During this time it takes a new employee to “get up to speed” with the rest of the team, production will never be as good as it could be.

There can also be a significant loss in business due to employee turnover. Many employees enjoy a loyal following of customers with whom they share a real connection. The father of a close friend of mine is a great example. As a parts dealer for an automotive service center he worked with many customer on a regular basis and formed a real bond with these customers. They trusted him and knew that he would do whatever possible to help them. When this individual left that position and went to a competing service center, so did almost all of his loyal customers. Little did the firm know that the customers were loyal to the employee, not the company - and they paid dearly when they were unable to keep him on board.

Another serious cost to companies when they loose employees is the loss of organizational knowledge. Many employees are able to become experts in the field they work in and when they leave, so does that knowledge. These employees are no longer available to share this knowledge and mentor junior members in the company. Once again these costs are near impossible to quantify, but there is sure to be an affect on the bottom line.

What You Can Do About It

The stakes are clearly high when it comes to retaining good employees within your organization. Undoubtedly some industries are more susceptible to experience higher turnover than others. Turnover in the Accommodation and Food Service and Leisure and Hospitality industries average over 50% annually. If you compete in these industries, or any other industry susceptible to high turnover rates, you know and expect that turnover is going to be a challenge, but it doesn’t need to cripple your company’s ability to be successful.

A Harvard University study reports that 80% of employee turnover can be attributed to mistakes made during the hiring process. The implications of this are huge: up to 80% of your turnover can be blamed on hiring mistakes. The problem lies in the employee selection process. Simply put the wrong people are being hired for the wrong jobs.

A Michigan State University indicates that traditional hiring techniques – résumé reviews, interviews, and reference checks only provide a 14% likelihood of a successful job hire. ONLY 14% !!! Your odds of winning a hand at Blackjack are significantly better at around 40%. If you rely only on traditional hiring practices you are truly gambling with the future success of your organization.

The Michigan State University study does offer hope in regards to these horrendous odds of hiring the right employee. The effective utilization of powerful personality assessments are shown to increase the likelihood of a successful job hire to 75%!!!. The power of these assessments is staggering and provides a powerful insight into the values, behaviors, and attributes the job candidate possesses. This information can than be compared against a Benchmark established for the job position and an informed hiring decision can now be made. The results are incredible.

Advanced courses such as pharmaceutical calculations, pharmacy law ethics, and clinical pharmocokinetics are required for pharmd degrees. The United States has always required a license to practice pharmacy.

Attending pharmacy school will give you rewards that benefit you directly and quickly. The skill of catching medicines that are prescribed by doctors that have bad effects when mixed in a human may save the life of someone. In your daily routines, you will be enriching the health and well being of your patients while giving advice and recording information.

Pharmacy schools teach skills to help you in your pharmacy job and also intuition deal with people in general. Your skills will be beneficial and give you positive rewards during your career as a pharmacist or pharmacist technician.
