The current crop of Generation Xers is a good example of this strategy. Curtis J. Crawford, author of "Corporate Rise: The X Principles of Extreme Personal Leadership," points to some fascinating statistic he's gathered.

1. Only three in 10 workers have been with their employers for 10 years.

2. Boomer work for the same employers three times longer than GenXers.

3. Technical jobs have 40% higher mobility rates than most jobs.

Crawford concludes that "ambitious young employees can't afford to stay in any one position longer than two years, because they will need to do about 10 different jobs to acquire the skills and knowledge needed to be senior management material."

Once you have established your business, you will need to care for it as it grows. This means taking inventory to see what you need to reorder, making sure customers are happy with the layout of the store, the products and the customer service. You may need to hire employees to help you take care of the business. In small towns, you may be limited in how much you can earn. This may be due to the income level of residents the need for your products and the cost of shopping in your store.

You may need to adjust your prices in order to sell more merchandise. Market analysis can help you make the necessary adjustments. Running a business in a small town may be more difficult than going to a more populated area. But if you can sell items online in addition to opening a storefront, your potential for profit is increased.

INTRODUCTION

We hear a lot these days about the deterioration of ethics in business, e.g., graft,
corruption, cheating, favoritism, skimming money, etc. This has resulted in a public
relations nightmare for business. If consumers do not trust a company, its a matter
of time before it goes out of business. This is supported by recent studies that give
evidence there is a correlation between business performance and ethical practices
(see the Institute of Business Ethics).

Basically, the Institute's study suggests there are long-term benefits associated with
enacting an ethics programs. Such studies and recent corporate snafus (e.g., Enron)
are impetus for companies coming to grips with ethics in the workplace.

There are essentially two considerations for devising an ethics program in
business; first, knowing what your ethics are, and, second; implementing them
in a consistent manner.

INTERPRETING ETHICS

There is little point in my telling you what is ethically right or wrong. You already
have an interpretation of this. But let us understand what influences our interpretation
of ethics; our interpersonal relations with others, such as our family, friends, neighbors,
fellow workers, as well as the media. Ethics is learned more than it is taught. It is based
on observations of the conduct of others, people we like and respect as opposed to those
we do not. It is then up to each of us to interpret these perceptions from which we will
base our conduct and behavior. The point is, we act on our perceptions, however accurate
or inaccurate they may be. Another influential factor are our own human frailties of
competitiveness, love, greed and ambition. But then again, this goes back to
interpersonal relations.

Let us recognize that ethical behavior is interpreted differently from person to person. What
one person may consider right or wrong may be different for the next person. The objective
in business is to implement a uniform form of behavior thereby instilling consumer
confidence in a company overall.

IMPLEMENTATION

Writing a corporate code of conduct is in vogue today as a means of articulating the
ethics of a business. Such codes are proudly displayed on web sites and in corporate
brochures more for public relations than anything else. True, they are useful for
disciplining an employee for an infraction of the rules, but I do not see them as an
effective way of implementing an ethics program. Understand this, regardless of what
the code of conduct states, the ethics of a business are whatever the top-dog says they
are. Too often I have seen companies say one thing, then act another, e.g.,
Enron.

Printed codes of conduct are nice, but we have to recognize that it is one thing to
enact legislation, quite another to enforce it. As stated earlier, ethical behavior
is based on observations. Regardless of what a code of conduct says in print, ethical
behavior is based on the relationship of superior and subordinate worker
relationships. If a subordinate observes an indiscretion by his superior, in all
likelihood it will be emulated by the subordinate. This phenomenon occurs
top-down in the whole corporate chain of command. If it breaks down anywhere
in the corporate hierarchy, it will become visible to the subordinate layers and
potentially create a "trickle-down" effect. This means the boss has to be a role
model for ethical behavior; they must "walk-the-walk" as well as "talk-the-talk." If
they do not, it will not go unobserved by their subordinates. Managers, therefore,
should avoid the "do as I say, not do as I do" phenomenon. They must lead by
example. Anything less is sheer hypocrisy and will inevitably lead to changes
in behavior.

It is simply not sufficient to issue platitudes as to what is and what isn't ethical
behavior. The manager must follow-up and assure ethical behavior is implemented
accordingly. In other words, we shouldn't just "desire" truth and honesty, we
must "demand" it. If one person gets away with an indiscretion, others will surely
follow. As such, when writing out a code of conduct, be sure to stipulate the
penalties for its violation.

The success of a business ethics program is ultimately measured by how well it
becomes ingrained in the corporate culture. As we have discussed in the past,
corporate culture pertains to the identity and personality of the enterprise. All
companies have a culture; a way they behave and operate. They may be organized
and disciplined or chaotic and unstructured. Either way, this is the culture which
the enterprise has elected to adopt. What is important is that in order for an employee
to function and succeed, they must be able to recognize, accept and adapt to the
culture. If they do not, they will be rejected (people will not work with them).

The intuitive manager understands the corporate culture and how to manipulate
it. Changing the Corporate Culture involves influencing the three elements of the
culture: its Customs, Philosophy and Society. This is not a simple task. It must be
remembered that culture is learned. As such, it can be taught and enforced. For
example, a code of conduct is useful for teaching, as is a system of rewards and
penalties. Designating people to act as watchdogs of the culture can also be useful,
but be careful not to create a climate of paranoia. Ultimately, as a manager, you
want to create a culture that promotes the ethical behavior you desire.

CONCLUSION

We now live in strange socioeconomic times. 40-50 years ago we
normally had one parent staying home to raise the kids. Now it is commonplace
to find families where both the husband and wife are working and paying
less attention to their children, thereby relegating their parenting duties to
teachers and coaches. In other words, the family unit, which is the basic
building block for learning ethical behavior, is becoming severely hampered.

In business today we have a "fast-track" competitive mentality which does not
encourage a spirit of teamwork but, rather, more rugged individualism. Nor
does it promote employee loyalty. Further, we now live in a society that
encourages people to go into debt, thereby causing financial tensions.

Bottom-line, ethics is about people and trust. Consequently, we should be
sharpening our people skills as opposed to avoiding it. We don't need more
maxims of how we should conduct our lives; we need to lead by example. As
such, we need more role-models and heroes than we do paperwork.

Let me close with one last thought on how ethics impacts business; there
is probably nothing worse in business than being caught in a lie, particularly
by a customer. Any trust that there may have been before disintegrates
immediately and business is lost. In this day and age, there is something
refreshingly honorable about a person where their word is their bond. Ethics
just makes good business sense.

I'd like to share with you a story about John.

John, a real estate agent, listed 2 properties. Three months later John was quite frustrated that these two properties hadn't moved quickly. He had tried everything - lowering the prices, advertising, leaving the house open all weekend long, sprucing up the listing, etc.

The worse part of all was that no one was even showing them!

John became sullen. He had succumbed to buying into the negative stories about the real estate marketing being bad. He started to tell everyone he came across how bad the market is and talked non-stop about how his money source was drying up. He started to feel sick a lot and had no energy. It was almost as if John had given up somehow.

So I let John in on a little secret.

It isn't a new secret to everyone, but it seemed to be new to John.

What you focus on expands. If you don't like your results, you need to change your thoughts.

OK, many of you might think this is really simple. And John did too. He challenged me and said, literally, 'That's Crap! How can changing the way I think about something change my results? Are you saying that I can create my cold? Or that I created the house sales to slow down?' Well, yes, sort of.

Here is the deal. There are laws that work all the time, no matter what, just like gravity. If you know how to work with the law, you will be tapped into the secret that will get you everything you dream about. If you don't, you will continue to feel frustrated and overwhelmed with life. I'd like to share my insights on this secret with Six Steps To Create an Instant Shift in Your Results.

1. Change your thinking. This is where it all begins. Knowing that the law of focus means that what you think about will expand in your life, then if you aren't getting the results you want, it would make sense to focus on what you DO want, right? Right.

2. Feel what it is like to live the outcome NOW. Sometimes thinking positively isn't enough. That's why affirmations alone don't' always work. In the ULTIMATE Business Breakthrough Intensive we conduct a process that helps you feel what its like to really live a life of ultimate success. That feeling sets off an electric vibration - almost like a magnet. Imagine all the juicy details of your life as if your desired outcome is already there!

3. Reverse engineer the vision. Reverse engineering literally means 'take apart a finished product to see how it works.' In all of my coaching programs I teach people how to see the result they want, then put themselves out there in their mind and look back over who they needed to be and what they needed to do to actually achieve it. It's easier to see the steps this way.

4. Be in focused action. Take action to support feeling as if it's already real. If it's about attracting money, you must begin to make choices in your head as if you are already wealthy. I'm not saying spend money you don't have. I'm saying you may need to create new habits, new to-do lists, or make new choices to be in alignment with being wealthy. If you keep doing what doesn't work, you can't energetically connect with the new results you want.

5. Get grateful. How often during the day do you focus on what you already have? Do you think, 'I'm so lucky that I have my own business?' or are you focused on everything you don't have? Do you cherish the people in your life or do you ruminate about the partner who left you last? Being grateful is part of how you shift away from what you don't want and turn on the attraction magnet.

6. Surround yourself with yes's. This little trick is worth thousands. You must create an environment where focused 'yes' thoughts can occur. If you are a farmer who needs a crop of beautiful corn to grow would you plant it in cement? No, you would plant it in fertile soil and give it lots of water and sunshine. If you are planting new seeds of positive outcomes in your life but you continue to surround yourself with negative, limited thinking people and situations you will choke off the new growth. Or at a minimum, find a lot of weeds in your garden that stifle you.

Here is what I want you to do now.

Think of ONE THING that you would like different in your life right now. It could be money, new opportunities, time off, a new client lead source - whatever. Now, make a commitment to clearly define this new outcome in your life and when it will be true. Then every day for 14 days, follow the 'shift' process above. Now just get ready for amazing shifts in your life. You might even notice them today.

What ever happened to John?

Four hours after John put the 'shift' process into action; he called me and said, 'I sold the condo today. And I've had 10 calls on the house and two potential offers coming into tonight.' If you are going to be successful in MLM or in any selling situation, then building rapport is essential. Building rapport with prospects is not something you are born with, but rather is a learned skill.

There are five major things that you need to focus on to build rapport.

The first essential skill is body language. You must learn to read body language. You can learn body language by checking out library books on the topic or by surfing the Internet for tips. You can also learn body language by simply paying attention when other people are around. Here are a few basics: eye contact is a must, avoidance can mean falsehood or mistrust with others. Keep arms in un-closed position, welcoming communication. Ditto with legs (don't sit with arms and legs crossed as it can mean you are closed to the other person). Maintain a nice, friendly smile (not tight lips). And don't get in the other person's space or face. Keep at a comfortable distance.

The next thing you should do is to get in a casual mode.
Relate in a comfortable manner with the other person. For instance, don't wear stiff new clothing and shoes that aren't broken in and hurt your feet. This can affect your own comfort, making you less at ease, regardless of who your prospect is. You want to be able to talk, laugh and enjoy the other person's company while you're building a relationship. No one wants to focus on whether they are having a bad hair day!

The third skill for rapport building is using some finesse. You must learn how to handle conversations and activities in a cordial and friendly manner using tact. For example, if your prospect is lewd or otherwise obnoxious (maybe drunk at an after dinner event), learn how to skillfully acknowledge him or her briefly, then turn your focus in a productive direction to seek out communication with another prospect, without hurting the other person's feelings, if possible. Sometimes etiquette books can help with this. Most often, though, look to the older and more experienced attendees in the room and follow their lead.

The next essental rapport building skill is handling conflict. You must learn how to handle difficult situations without falling apart at the seams.

Finally, you need to learn cooperation. Cooperating with and supporting one another should be a common goal with prospects. You'll both be seeking referrals down the road and want to be able to stick together and support each other in a professional, businesslike manner.

As the saying goes, "Rome wasn't built in a day." Neither is rapport. Establishing and building relationships is a process. Mistakes will be made. By learning to get through rough spots, offering and accepting apologies and working things out, you'll reap rapport.

What You Focus On Is What You Get

What you focus on and pay attention to at any given time is very important. You need to concentrate to finish what you started. If you don't focus, you can be easily distracted and you can pass your whole life away, frustrated and unfulfilled, without accomplishing anything of what you wanted.

Too often we focus on something that is inappropriate for us and it drains us of energy. There are many people in this world who are constantly focused on paying their bills.

That becomes their only focus, and they lose sight of the needs of other people around them, including their children, their spouses, and friends. Debt is a huge distraction and great pain to so many of us. We are overwhelmed with debt. We really have to focus to stop spending, and to get out of debt, otherwise we will also never be able to accomplish what we are called to do.

Often times you must change your focus and concentrate on attaining something that will help you or propel you forward with time. For instance, you may need to go to school and get a degree before you can take a job that is higher paying. But you have to take your focus from your bills to the focus of completing your school requirements, and do it well. Once you receive that degree or certification, then you need to focus on presenting yourself to prospective employers and getting a better paying job.

If you focus on that job, and keep your spending habits down to a minimum, you can pay down your bills over time.

People can get into mental loops that keep playing the same things over in their head. Unless they put effort into breaking these mental loops, and control their focus, they will not live their lives to the fullest. The same goes for you. If you focus on bizarre things all the time, bizarre things will begin to dominate your spirit. If you focus on all the things that cause you to worry, you will be worried all the time. If you focus on fearful things all the time, you will become fearful, distrustful and isolated.

These are some of the mental loops that grab your attention and focus. You have to control your thoughts and break bad mental habits. Pay attention to what you focus on. We have to plug up the drains on our time and our energy. If you have work to do on a project, do your work first and then go and play.

Put your focus into areas that will create a sustainable income and then you can go and have fun. If your partner has become your whole focus, at what cost does that come? Are you willing to pay that cost? Can you have more of a balance in that area of your life? If you are with the right partner, h/she will not be possessive of your time but will share it equally, will encourage you to be the best that you can be, and will let you focus on what you need to. You will do the same in return. It is a support team.

One such mental loop that is created is always putting your thoughts on something that is fearful to you. How often do we focus on something that we don't want to happen, only to see that become a reality? Your constant focus has acted like a magnet and drawn in the very thing of which you are petrified. Your focus, a powerful tool when used in the right capacity, has become a stagnant, redundant drain on your life force. The only way to correct the drain is to reconnect to a new focus. Stop the worrisome, fearful, anxious thoughts and start thinking about how you would like to appear in your new life. Start focusing on what you would like to accomplish and how you will go about doing that. It is not too late to change your focus from something negative and hurtful to something expansive and productive.

Fear and worry causes your energy to retract and become smaller, whereas joy and good imagination causes an expansion to the unlimited capacity of which you are really capable. You can choose to redirect your focus right now.

If you are working on a project, you must focus on all the steps of the project before they are executed. That way you will have a solid working plan to complete the project. After plotting out the structure of the project, you will focus on each step in priority. Usually you have to do one thing before you do another, so there is a progression and order. On occasion you have to complete two or more tasks almost simultaneously.

Do what you need to do to the best of your ability, but do not lose your focus, which is completing the whole project. You can't let yourself get stuck on one part. If you are stymied in one area there may be another part of the project where you can begin to move forward. You must be conscious of the focus of time, and attention, and do not let yourself be distracted.

If you are working on a project by yourself, you must have discipline, patience, good working habits, be able to motivate yourself, and determine your focus. When you are self employed or working on your own, you are the director, employee, and motivator. If you can't motivate, and discipline yourself, nothing will be accomplished well. If you are learning something new it requires a lot of focus, concentration, determination, and self-encouragement.

If you are creating something new, you must hone your focus for something that is not yet there. You must continually focus on something in your imagination that is further down the line, but that is coming. Doubt can distract you from your focus. It is your job to shake yourself and refocus on your goals. You must see yourself in your imagination, having accomplished what you set out to do.

Besides mental loops that can distract your focus, interruptions from people can break your focus, and the foods you eat can diminish your concentration and focus. Excessive sugar, caffeine, and alcohol, in your diet can wreak havoc on your concentration and your work. Again, it's part of self-discipline to monitor what and how much you are ingesting, and to guard your focus. People can easily take all your allotted time if you don't politely let them know that you are working right now. Again, you can make a choice to take a moment with a friend or associate, or you can let them know that you need to continue working.

Everyday more people move into the home based business field selling some sort of service or product. New websites are being built by various service companies. Being independent all my life, I decided to design my own website and stand out from the crowd.

In searching for products to put on my web site I noticed that I was learning more about the product before placing it on my web site. I started to examine each product more carefully to ensure that it met the criteria I developed for my site. You see I realized that the site now was my creation, and represented me. The products would also have to represent me, and who I am, and not be full of gimmicks or hype.

The products also had to be things that people were buying and not just what I thought they wanted to purchase. So I asked myself the same set of questions about each product before I put them on my site. For instance: "Who wants this product?"; "How much of this product is being purchased?"; "Why would they buy it online?'; "What would be the return on my investment?"; "Where should I place it on my site?"; "When do I decide to replace it?".

After putting the site together I decided to put my shoes on backwards and look at the site through the eyes of the potential buyer...and WOW! What a difference some thought makes. What I saw in my new site made me very proud. Now I had something that was unique, separated me from the pack, represented quality and value, and was me. It was a business that I could count on, and represent to others who were serious about shopping from home and/or working from home. It was also a great feeling of accomplishment and a lot of fun since I never designed a site before in my whole life.

Now although the site is the "hero" in my marketing program, it is not the complete marketing program. I still need to promote the products and business. I found a great way of attracting potential customers to my site is by writing articles. Through these articles I am able to establish my business knowledge and publish these articles on the internet at article information sites. People looking for information on home businesses will end up reading my articles and then visit my site.

Since most people visiting the internet are looking for information, I offer my visitors a free e-book about the science of the internet, and a free newsletter with over a hundred marketing tips for a home based business.

Of course, search engine optimization is part of the marketing program along with various forms of advertising both online and offline.

Keeping my competition constantly in my sight is also critical so that I can take advantage of any opportunity to gain an edge and stand out from the crowd.
