To Succeed in MLM You Must Position Yourself as the Expert

When people see you as the expert they will seek you out. When you seek them out you will be seen as just another salesperson.

If people see you as an expert, they will call you. Yes. They will seek you out, instead of the other way around. Doesn't that sound like a much better way to do business? Of course it does.

Now before you run around positioning yourself as the expert, you need to do some homework. Then, you will actually have some degree of expertise and have something to offer people; but more about that another time.

Some years ago, when my first BMW was coming off of its factory warranty, I needed to find someone to service my prized car. I was not thrilled with the idea of using the dealership for servicing because they were really expensive and they were always suggesting things to do to the car that were costly and not necessary. So, I got a referral and stopped by this independent repair shop.

As I met with the shop owner, he assured me that he had been working on these expensive German cars for years and would do a great job for me. He also emphatically warned me that the mechanics in the dealerships were often new and inexperienced. He even more emphatically warned me that the BMW dealerships charged incredibly high prices for every little thing they did. So, there was no doubt that not only would some inexperienced guy be working on my car, but I would also be overcharged.

After making the appointment for the first non-dealer servicing of my BMW I felt a great sense of relief. I avoided having some inexperienced mechanic mess up my car and I avoided getting ripped off. Boy, was I lucky to find this guy.

I then realized what a great job of selling and positioning himself the shop owner did.
He had me thinking that he was the only qualified expert that I would find to service my car and to charge a fair price. Wow! This guy was good. Turns out he was a good mechanic. So, he was a good choice. But think about what he did. He positioned himself as the most experienced and most ethical mechanic. I could use his services or I could go to the auto dealer to get inferior work and pay higher prices.

The mechanic positioned himself as the person who could fill a need and solve my problem. That is what you must do in any business, including network marketing.

When people see you as the expert, they will seek you out and call you instead of the other way around.

You have to position yourself as the person who can solve their problems. If you are talking to someone about a network marketing program you must position yourself as the person who can show them success. Always remember that nothing succeeds like selling success.
