How to Make Pos Checkouts Faster

Description:

This article givs suggestions on POS Checkout performance improvements

Content:

Are you having hard times arranging items left un-purchased at the check outs during the peak hours?

I remember, Ramazan Moon was sighted and Taraweeh prayers announced in the mosques. Store Manager's stress was noticeable as very soon the customers were going to pack the supermarket up to its limits. It is hard to imagine how to handle customer queues at the check out equipped with old equipment, untrained cashiers, and a slower network. After the mid night the store manager found more than 20 carts and many baskets full of items which customers left without purchasing them as they could no longer stand in the queue after spending 2-3 hours shopping. The supermarket lost many potential customers, sadly, many items were frozen and fresh which got damaged.

This was my first experience in Saudi Arabia at a large retail outlet. Based on the above experience, latest technology was deployed to avoid such situations from happening again.

Following suggestions are based on my experience in the same chain of retail outlets, which could help you, speed up the check outs and keep your customers happy and also reduce time to put back the items in the shelves … REDUCE lost sales, and reduce inventory losses.

Bar Code Scanners

Handheld scanners are not always the best option; the best option would be to go for a 3D scanner. Mostly, a small outlet with 3-4 Checkouts, may opt for handheld or 2D Scanner, a larger, busier store must go for state of the art 3D Scanners.

Right investment in scanners will not only help in increasing the check out speed but also would help increase inventory accuracy.

NO MOUSE ….. Use Hot Keys.

Remove the mouse from the checkout…..

Use Hot keys, Short cuts which are predefined in the application or are parameterized in many instances.

Hardware and Software

Do not buy cheap unbranded keyboards, scanners, and other equipment. Imagine a POS Failure at peak time. The use of old, cheap hardware will contribute to frustration of not only the customers but also the employees.

Similarly, you might not be able to find patches, PTFs for cheap software. The bugs would be unknown. The customer would not like to wait until you fix the "FILE NOT FOUND" error for example.

Good software would come with all the required patches and ptfs and you might find some knowledge base articles over the internet to find out reported bugs and prepare the store before the disaster happens.

You must deploy quality hardware and software at the point of sale.

Touch Screens

Touch screens do not only uplift the checkout "LOOKS" but also effectively increase the checkout speeds, as the conventional input media Keyboard and the mouse are both slow.

Before buying the touch screens check if the POS software would allow you to use them.

Avoid Dot Matrix Printers

Dot Matrix Printers not only create noise but are also very slow; even the benefits of a faster scanner could easily be overruled due to such printers. Thermal Printers are quite and fast and also allow you to print your store logo nicely on the customer slip.

Also, pl. see if changing the roll is very easy and simple. It should not happen that it becomes a complicated activity and a new cashier faces problems in front of the customers.

Trained Cashiers

Cashiers must be properly trained before being appointed at the checkout. I spent 15 minutes at the checkout because the cashier, mistakenly, scanned the item twice, upon noticing the error he tried to void the last scan, unfortunately, he was not authorized to do so. I had to wait for the Cashier supervisor to come with the KEY and solve the issue. This phenomenon is very common and I believe many of you would have experienced that.

Another reason for good training is that untrained cashiers mostly ruin your inventories e.g. scanning Pepsi, Miranda together as Pepsi. I caught one cashier who was newly appointed, he used to "enjoy" scanning every 1 SR worth item with a barcode label that he had pasted on his POS. Imagine for how long he was doing that and what would be the impact on inventory accuracy!!!

Another case happened when there was large queue of customers; the cashier was new and was from Indonesia, he did not know how to count in ENGLISH….

Right investment in this important area does not only make the check out faster but helps maintaining the accurate inventory.
